Scholars on Capitol Hill

Truman Scholars

The Stennis Center for Public Service’s Truman Scholars Day on Capitol Hill, established in 2003, provides an annual opportunity for students to visit the U.S. Capitol and congressional offices. Approximately 60 Truman Scholars come to Washington, D.C., for internships in federal agencies, nonprofits, and professional organizations each summer. When Congress is not in session, the Truman Scholars also have the unique opportunity to visit the floors of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

Since 1991, the Stennis Center has developed a strong partnership with the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Truman Scholarships are awarded to college juniors with outstanding academic achievements, leadership potential, and a demonstrated desire to pursue a career in public service.

The Mississippi State University Presidential Scholars Program

MSU Presidential Scholars with U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS)

The Stennis Center for Public Service partners with the Mississippi State University Presidential Scholars Program to provide high-achieving students with opportunities to explore leadership and careers in public service. Through this partnership, Presidential Scholars engage with public service leaders in American cities and gain exposure to real-world pathways in government and civic leadership.

Established in 2006, the MSU Presidential Scholars Program represents the university’s most outstanding students. Scholars are selected competitively and receive MSU’s most prestigious scholarship package, valued at approximately $107,000 over four years of undergraduate study, which includes tuition, housing, meals, and enrichment funding for experiences such as study abroad and undergraduate research.
