Public Service Review: Summer 2023

Summer can often feel like a time of procrastination and escapism. Projects are put off until the fall, and those daily walks are avoided to escape the heat waves. While rest is important, service is always needed. In the following pages, ten authors prove this by discussing the areas public servants are most needed and the strides they are taking to fill those gaps.
The summer 2023 edition of the Public Service Review features the experiences of former congressional interns Christopher Robinson, Lydia Sigman, Mateus Voltolini, Samina Patel, and Tatyana Mayo. From the West Coast to the East Coast and beyond, these authors share their perspectives of the challenges, surprises, and inspiration taken from their service on Capitol Hill.
In addition, this issue provides insight from public servant leaders into the past, present, and future of public service nationally and globally. Jamya Davis speaks with former congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and former congressman Tom Petri on their over forty years of combined service in the U.S. House of Representatives. Bringing perspective from the public health field, Rohini Achal sits down with Dr. Bizu Gelaye to discuss the unique obstacles in his career as an academic and epidemiologist and the hope that drives him forward as a community servant. In his interview with Senator Mark Kelly, former Navy pilot and astronaut, Tony Ruan again discusses the limitations posed to progress and highlights the Senator’s many forms of service and the tenacity that allows him to pursue a more unified and effective service.
From public health to political office, these contributors come from a variety of backgrounds, fields, and positions. However, they work with the same goal. Through individual voices, these authors speak one collective message: we are called to serve in every capacity and every season.
