CONNECTING CARRIERS AND CONGRESS

U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia met with Commander Randy Van Rossum with Naval Reactors (left) and the Prospective Commanding Officer of the USS CARL VINSON, Captain Kent “Torch” Whalen (right), as part of the Stennis Center’s program Connecting Carriers and Congress.  The program brings the Prospective Commanding Officers of the nuclear aircraft carriers, who are in Washington, DC for a five-week nuclear refresher course, to Capitol Hill for an opportunity to develop mutual understanding between civilian leaders in Congress and the main Fleet units.  The USS VINSON (CVN 70) is the third U.S. Navy Nimitz class supercarrier and is named after Carl Vinson, a former congressman from Georgia.

2011 USS Vinson

The 2011 USS CARL VINSON leadership award winners, their captain and spouses were in the nation's capital October 23-26 as part of the Stennis Center's Aircraft Carrier Leadership Awards Program.  Included in their activities were visits to the Pentagon, The Washington Navy Yard, where they met with Admiral Kirk Donald, Director, Navy Nuclear Propulsion, and the U.S. Capitol, where they visited the offices of several Members of Congress and toured the U.S. Senate chamber.

Former Congressmen David R. Minge (D-MN) and Peter Torkildsen (R-MA) visited students at Millersville University in Pennsylvania on October 2-4, 2011 as part of the Congress to Campus program.

SENATORS MEET WITH COLIN POWELL

A dinner discussion was held on Monday, September 19, 2011 as part of the Stennis Center’s ongoing Civil-Military Leadership Program, which brings together leaders of the military and civil leaders in our government.  This event was part of a series led by Senators Jack Reed and Roger Wicker and is aimed at freshman Members of the Senate.  The discussion at Monday night's dinner with General Colin Powell included topics such as America's position in today's changing world and the impact of a changing budget situation on the military.

STENNIS FELLOWS CONDUCT DIALOGUE RETREAT

The 112th Congress Stennis Fellows met at the National Conservation Training Center near Shepherdstown, West Virginia September 16-17 to explore more effective usage of dialogue as a leadership tool on Capitol Hill.  The bipartisan and bicameral group of Congressional staff leaders is exploring the theme of Moving beyond Political Polarization:  How Can Congress Best Serve the Nation in the Coming Decade? as they work together in a series of roundtable sessions and retreats.

Stennis Novice Tournament A Success!

The John C. Stennis Novice Speech and Debate Tournament took place September 9-10, 2011 on the campus of Mississippi State University.  The unique feature of the competition is that only high school students who have never debated can participate. The annual tournament began in 1995.

The Stennis Fellows of the 112th Congress gathered on July 25 at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. for their opening session.  Later in the week, they visited the USS JOHN C. STENNIS aircraft carrier off the coast of San Diego.

2011 USS Lincoln and USS Nimitz Award Winners Visit Washington, DC

The leadership award winners from the USS LINCOLN and the USS NIMITZ visited Washington, D.C. with the families on July 7, 2011.  Richard Hunt, the Director of the Center for Legislative Archives, hosted the group at the National Archives Building.  Former Congressman Ron Sarasin, President and Chief Executive Officer of the United States Capitol Historical Society, took the group on an extended tour of the U.S. Capitol.  The Stennis Center partners with eight aircraft carriers to recognize some of the men and women who demonstrate outstanding public service leadership.

2011 JOHN C. STENNIS CONGRESSIONAL DEBATE

The Stennis Center sponsored the John C. Stennis Congressional Debate June 13-18, 2011 in Dallas, Texas as part of the National Speech & Debate Tournament.  Over 400 of the nation’s best high school debaters participated in this mock Congress vying for the honor of being crowned national champion.  The Stennis Center supports legislative debate competition for high school students to develop public service leadership skills.

STENNIS CENTER HOSTS TRUMAN SCHOLARS DAY ON CAPITOL HILL

Truman Scholars Day

The Stennis Center hosted Truman Scholars Day on Capitol Hill on June 24, 2011.  Over 40 Harry S. Truman Scholars in Washington, D.C. for the summer spent time with Senior Stennis Fellows learning about how Congress works.  Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, the first Truman Scholar elected to the U.S. Senate, met with the group, as did Don Ritchie, the historian of the Senate. The Truman Scholars also visited the floor of the Senate.
